The Cleveland Play House, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact, put on a one-night-only reading of “8,” written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER Founding Board Member Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar) on June 30, 2013. “8” is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now before the Supreme Court as Hollingsworth v. Perry), the case filed by AFER to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental freedom to marry. Black based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, firsthand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families, to tell the story in the actual words of participants on both sides of the courtroom."

All proceeds were shared equally between the American Foundation for Equal Rights and the Cleveland chapter of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). Here you can see various members of the Play House and PFLAG Cleveland receiving the donation!
