August Support & Education Option

Post date: Aug 9, 2015 10:29:36 PM

Our next support group meeting is TUESDAY, August 11th @ 6:45 PM at Trinity Commons (E22nd St & Prospect Ave). Lighted, secure parking is available.

PFLAG Cleveland's monthly educational series features Brooke Smith, the PFLAG National Field & Policy Manager for the Central US Region. Brooke will discuss some of the common challenges faced by trans people, the challenges that exist for people who are straight and LGB to becoming trans allies, and learn some of the core competencies of trans allies. As well, we will highlight activities and behaviors that boost trans inclusion, and find out how to effectively express yourself as a trans ally.

The program features a PowerPoint presentation with open ended questions, group activities, and a call to action. The session will have a heavy emphasis throughout on participant discussion of the issues in a safe, nonjudgmental space. Specific prompted activities around conceptualizing allies, discussing the deep challenges for people on this topic, expressing oneself as an ally, and information-sharing will happen throughout. Participants will also be provided with free copies of PFLAG’s newest publications focused on transgender and gender nonconforming issues to use in their work.

The session is offered as an alternative to our monthly support group meeting. Those interested in attending can join PFLAG Cleveland members in the main support group room just prior to the support group meeting.
